Laurie J. Kunzle

Composer - Performer - Educator

Laurie J. Kunzle is a composer, musician, and educator from New Jersey.  She has taught for over 30 years and was the Director of Bands at Lakeland Regional High School in Wanaque, NJ for 25 years.  She holds a B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University of PA and Master of Arts in Music Theory/Composition from Montclair University.  

Kunzle has composed original works for concert band and chamber ensembles and she has arranged and composed for concert bands, marching bands and drum corps in the U.S. and England.  Her compositions have been played by the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Ridgewood Concert Band, the Hanover Wind Symphony, the NJ Region 1 Band, and more.  She was a winner in the Dallas Wind Symphony fanfare contest and has received commissions from The First Presb. Church in White Bear Lake, MN, The Ben Franklin Middle School NJ,  Vernon Township HS Band in Vernon NJ, and 2022 Ridgewood HS Band, Ridgewood NJ.

As a performer/clarinetist, Kunzle plays with the New Jersey Wind Symphony, and has performed with the Kennett Symphony Orchestra, the Paramus Symphony, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, the National Community Band in Las Vegas NV, the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band, as concert master with the Ramapo Wind Symphony, and as a freelance musician.  She has conducted over 30 musicals and performed on clarinet & saxophone with many  theater groups including; The Montville Barn Theater, The Oradell Players, and West Milford Players.  She studied conducting with Mallory Thompson, Jeffrey Renshaw and Jacques Vois, and has toured Europe with the American Music Abroad concert band as a conductor for "several hundred high school honors musicians".

Kunzle has been involved in the Marching Arts for over 30 years teaching, writing, performing and adjudicating. A music educator for many marching bands and drum corps, a horn player with the 85' Garfield Cadets, head drum major with the six time DCA Champion Bushwackers, and brass instructor & brass caption head with several drum corps.  She has arranged music and worked on design teams for marching bands and drum corps including the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wind Jammers, Bushwackers NJ, Connecticut Hurricanes, and Pride of Bristol of Bristol England.  

As an educator, Kunzle has been honored and recognized for her contributions to the community.  She was named in Outstanding Young Women in America for 1999, 2004, and 2010.  She was the 2011 VFW post 6765 teacher of the year, the VFW District 1 teacher of the year and the VFW NJ State High School teacher of the year for 2012.  Kunzle was honored by the Knights of Columbus of Ringwood with the 2020 Community Service Award and Citizen of the year. She was also recognized in 2020 by the American Legion Post 246 of Haskell NJ for service to the community.
