Laurie J. Kunzle

Composer - Performer - Educator

Laurie J. Kunzle is a composer, musician, and educator residing in New Jersey.  She has taught for over 30 years and has been the Director of Bands at Lakeland Regional High School in Wanaque, NJ for 25 years.  She holds a B.S. in Music Education from West Chester University of Pennsylvania and Master of Arts in Music Theory/Composition from Montclair State University.


Kunzle has composed original works for concert band and chamber ensembles and she has arranged and composed for concert bands, marching bands and drum corps across the U.S. and England.  Her compositions have been played by the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Ridgewood Concert Band, the Hanover Wind Symphony, and the North Jersey Region 1 Band.   She was a winner in the Dallas Wind Symphony fanfare contest and received commissions from The First Presbyterian Church in White Bear Lake, MN, The Ben Franklin Middle School Ridgewood, NJ, and Vernon Township HS in Vernon, NJ.   


As a clarinetist, Kunzle has performed with the New Jersey Wind Symphony/ Ridgewood Concert Band, as concert master with the Ramapo Wind Symphony, the National Community Band in Las Vegas, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band, the Paramus Symphony, and the Kennett Symphony Orchestra.  She has conducted over 30 musicals and performed (clarinet/saxophone) with many  theaters groups including; The Montville Barn Theater, The Oradell Players, and West Milford Players.  She has studied conducting with Mallory Thompson, Jeffrey Renshaw and Jacques Vois, and has toured Europe with the American Music Abroad concert band as a conductor for "several hundred high school honors musicians".


Kunzle has been involved in the Marching Arts for over 30 years teaching, writing, judging and performing. A music educator for many marching bands and drum corps, a horn player (with the 85' Garfield Cadets), drum major (with the six time DCA Champion Bushwackers), and brass instructor & caption head with several corps. She has arranged music and worked on the design teams for drum corps including Bushwackers NJ, Connecticut Hurricanes, U.S. Coast Guard Academy Wind Jammers, and Pride of Bristol of Bristol England.  


Over the years as a music educator in New Jersey, Kunzle has been honored and recognized for her contributions to the community with the band programs she works with.  She was named the VFW post 6765 teacher of the year, and also recognized as the VFW District 1 teacher of the year and the VFW  New Jersey State high school teacher of the year for 2012.  Recently she was awarded a 2020 Community Service Award by the Knights of Columbus of Ringwood and recognized by the American Legion Post 246 of Haskell NJ in 2020 for service to the community.
